A friend’s wedding

Some of the weddings that come our way are from friends in years past… and we were so honored that Kristen called us about her wedding last year.

Remember when…

… I would blog 2-3 times a week?

It was pretty regular, too.  Sometimes 2-3 times a day!  Oh, yeah.

But I got behind, and busy, and didn’t have as much time to do it anymore.  And I still don’t.  But you will start seeing them again soon.  The best reason I can give you for why you will see them is because I have been asked to do so. So, here goes…

First, before I start in on blog entries for the sessions, weddings, and more, I have a couple of new projects we are getting ready to roll out.  Both take full advantage of the fact that we have a super, large studio with state-of-the-art facilities and lots of space.  Having a studio gives us a unique opportunity to create new stuff that we sometimes can’t do on-location.  Once we’re ready to reveal them, you’ll know what I mean.  One of the projects has been in the works for about twelve years, and the other going on three years.

Happy Birthday Shaftora

Some news items for you, too. Diana’s birthday is November 6.  Please feel free to wish her a happy birthday. We won’t be at the studio on her birthday (it’s a Sunday), but will be all this week thru Friday.  She likes purple, Scottie stuff, and sugar-free licorice. 🙂  We will also be closed on Saturday, November 5 so that we can celebrate her birthday in style.

Thanksgiving Turkey

There are really no holiday cutoffs this year.  However, if you want your print products for Christmas gift delivery, they need to be ordered by December 17.  A few items should be ordered earlier than that, such as books.  Please ask if you aren’t sure.

The studio will be closed for Thanksgiving and the remainder of that weekend.  We’ll reopen on Tuesday, November 29. The studio will be closed for Christmas and New Year’s from December 24 through January 2.  As always, we will be happy to try to accommodate your holiday portrait requests during those times, but we won’t be at the studio for you to pick up or place orders during those dates.

Model calls.  We have three model calls coming up.  One is for a model for one of the two projects I discussed above.  We have one model already, a young lady we have photographed before, but we’d like to have another to kind of round things out.  The next is for newborns… this is not specifically a model call, but we have changed a lot of things about our newborn photography, and we welcome anyone whose had a baby, and who is no more than ten days old, to contact us about getting a complementary session.  The last is for next year’s high school seniors (Class of 2013).  Senior models get two full sessions, free products, cash, and discounts on their future orders.  For any of these, email me or call 304-263-3100 and talk with us (or just leave a message).

I think I’ve said enough for one email.  Hope you’re looking forward to the new blog entries as much as I am.

For the bride

Seems I’m always relating a little history when I post about people.  But it seems like so many of my clients are people I’ve known for a long time.  I knew Kristen when she played softball in high school.  Years later, she is well-established in her career, and marrying her high school sweetheart.  These are just some of the photos from her bridal session!

A new way to blog

When I first set up this blog, it was my hope to update it as often as there was something new to talk about. Well, in addition to several new posts coming this week, I will also be able to post from anywhere via my phone.

Interesting.

Here’s a picture of the screen for a post that you can see on Monday morning. Let’s see what else I can get into. 🙂

We have frames!

Remember all those frames we are practically giving away?  Just thought you would like to see a picture of SOME of them.  This picture was taken on Wednesday, and we’ve added several more since then.  And there’s not enough room to show them all.

We have the most of 16×20 frames, but several in 11×14, 20×24 and larger.  Plus most of the 8×10 frames aren’t even shown.

You can see from this view that we also have several storyboards, ovals and a few huge frames (two cherry wood identical, three gold identical).  ALL are on sale.

Don’t miss out.  Frame prices are as follows:

  • 8×10 $15
  • 11×14 $25
  • 16×20 $35
  • 20×24 $45
  • 24×36 and larger $55
  • Small storyboards $25
  • Small ovals $15
  • ALL include mounting (for our photos)
  • Get 15% off ANY non-stock frame we sell

Call 304-263-3100 to make an appointment to view all the frames. 🙂

Announcing ONE DAY COUPONS

hug coupon

We are announcing one of the best of our holiday promotions… and you are on the front line of getting it before anyone else… Blog readers, Facebook followers and current clients only will know about the ONE DAY COUPONS before anyone else (but feel free to share).

What is it? A One-Day Coupon is a coupon that is only valid for ONE day.  To activate your coupon, you must call on the same day that the coupon is released.  To activate, you must book a portrait session (and prepay for the session) or other event with us.  We will make a note on your account that you are eligible to use the One-Day Coupon for the date you call.

How does it work? When you come to your portrait/order session, redeem your coupon for whatever the coupon is valued for.  And there are some GREAT values on the way.  We are planning to run One-Day Coupons at least through the month of November.  Great for holiday gift-giving, savings galore and some wonderful portraits, too.

What is the catch? The only catch is that you must book and hold your session by the date on the coupon.  And you MUST call the same day that the coupon is valid.  Make sure to present the coupon during your order session and (voila!) instant savings!  One-Day Coupons cannot be combined with any other special offer, any other coupon, or discounts already in place.  One per client per visit. 🙂

How will I know? One Day coupons will be announced here on the blog by midnight of the day prior to a new coupon.  Go to the coupon page, print out the coupon and CALL US that same day.  Since our blog is fed onto our Facebook page, all our Facebook followers will get the word, too.  You have to watch, though… check our blog every day!

The first one will be announced tonight between 11pm and midnight.  Are you ready?

The Right Photographer?

The truth about photographers is that no one is the same as the other.  There are a variety of differences once you get past the fact that all of us have cameras, lenses, flashes and Photoshop.  Sometimes those subtleties make a difference to people, and sometimes they don’t.  It is estimated that 10% of the population will marry in any given year.  Depending upon where you live, that’s a LOT of weddings.

So of those people getting married, only about half (yes, only half) will have someone whose exclusive responsibility is to photograph the wedding.  Of those who have a photographer at all, only about 60% of those people will hire a professional.  Surprising?

If you decide to have a photographer at your wedding, you may hear from many photographers to make sure this thing or that thing happens, and some of it relates to creativity and style.  But one person cannot dictate how another person should select by style, nor can they mandate the style for an industry.

But there are some questions you should ask to be sure that your photographer is prepared for whatever happens:

  • Do they have liability insurance?  This insurance protects you and your guests should the photographer somehow injure someone or damage property.  The reason we carry liability insurance is because you never know what’s going to happen; and a professional should be ready for such contingencies.
  • Do they have backup equipment?  Cameras and lenses, flashes and batteries are all just electro-mechanical devices that will ultimately fail.  Wear and tear, bumps and bruises, and whatever else will contribute to the failure of a piece of equipment that your photographer relies upon.  There are no “second chances” during a wedding, a family event, or that special moment.  If your photographer doesn’t have backup equipment, and something fails, precious memories WILL be lost.
  • Will your images be backed up?  Will they be safe?  It is true that digital images are easier to secure than film was, but there are still a multitude of things that can go wrong, including memory card failure, file transfer errors, hard drive crash, and on and on.  We adopted an on-location backup method long ago, and it has made a difference in how safe we feel our images are.  Once we return to the studio, those image files are backed up onto our server, and then backed up to an offsite location.  If your photographer is that conscientious about backing up your images, then they really care about what they are doing.

Anything over and above what I’ve listed here may be considered subjective.  Just remember there are some pretty shady people out there, and there are some really great photographers, too.  Just do a little extra homework and make sure that the photographer you are hiring is one who is committed to making your event a stress-free one.
