Location, Location, Location

Many years ago (I won’t say HOW many) all my portraiture was on-location.  Most of the reason was I didn’t want to set up a studio, nor could I accommodate a large crowd in any of the studio settings I had created.  Over the last 15 or so years, I’ve had a studio setting with which I can do most portraiture.  And more recently, since moving to our Martinsburg studio, we can do thousands more things than ever before.

But I long for location work!  The best reason is that I look at all our work and think “it’s not complete enough… there needs to be location work in there.”  And so we set out to photograph some of our subjects on-location.  We think the results are pretty inspirational.  Click on any image to see it bigger.  I would love to hear your comments.

Location portraiture is available for seniors, modeling, families, babies and much more.  Ask about your special location!

My birthday, YOU get presents

Candles spell out the traditional English birt...

I’m not getting older… I decided to refuse aging long ago.  At least in my mind… my body has accepted aging quite readily.

That aside, I have decided this year that I will be giving you a present for my birthday.

Here’s the deal:

  • I’m giving you a $100 credit toward your session fee and order.  Yes, there are some caveats.
  • First, you have to hold your sitting this Saturday, June 19.  Why then?  Because the day is open and available.
  • Second, it can’t be a senior portrait.  Senior sessions are handled completely different than families, babies and the like.
  • Third, you have to reserve your spot with a $50 order deposit (it will be applied toward your order, along with the balance of your Birthday Present credit).  And you have to call or email to get the deal!

That’s it.  Sessions can take place in our studio or in our portrait park… we’ll be happy to accommodate any size family or any number of children (with an appropriate number of parental wranglers, of course).

Call or email now… you won’t regret it.  Seriously. 🙂

Oh, to be Kayla!

Everyone’s life is interesting.

Kayla’s is just “awesome.”  As a 2011 senior from Martinsburg High, she has a whole world to look forward to. 🙂

In-studio dancers

We sometimes get dancers who would prefer to come to our studio to get their dance portraits done.  This year, we invited a whole dance studio to come see us for their portraits.  Below are a few of the results:

Move Along!!

Today I was working on some modeling shots for a young lady who is looking to get some work in the magazine world.  Her parents accompanied her, mom basically offering her hair-checking skills and dad holding a large reflector.

The first shots we did were in the field across the street.  We are right on the corner of a U.S. Route and a fairly busy road into a subdivision, so there’s constantly traffic.  As we were getting set up, there were plenty of lookie-loos trying to figure out “what’s that wacky photographer doing THIS time???” coming into and out of the subdivision… they’re my neighbors, so they can ask that.

Once we got the motorcycle in place, the lighting ready, and the pose set, my client took off a small jacket and was wearing a bikini bathing suit top and short shorts, along with some really cool western boots.  Now there were a few more people slowing to take a look.  And in my rather narrow way of thinking, I was focused on my work and not the traffic.  I was busily trying to make sure dad was “aiming” the reflector properly, that the pose was right and that my angle was precise for the types of shots I was trying to get.

Until I heard “Move Along!  Keep going!”  I turned to see mom, looking toward traffic on the subdivision road, waving people along who’d slowed down to take a look.  In all fairness, they could have been looking at WHAT we were doing, and not her 20-year old daughter.  But she wasn’t taking any chances, discouraging any possibility that someone was going to get an eyeful at her daughter’s expense.

This happened at least 2-3 times more before we wrapped the shoot in that field and moved to the next stage, which was in our private portrait park (6 foot fence 🙂 for more shots in another bathing suit.  Then we moved into the studio for some more shots in a red dress.

I think we got a lot of good photos done.  I have not really started editing yet.

There’s a part of me that expects to hear “okay, move along” if I look at any one image too long. :\

Thanks to all who helped with the shoot today, including Ceejae, who continues to amaze me with her makeup skills.

Kristen and Justin got engaged

What a delightful couple these two are… very down to earth, and we clicked almost instantly.  They are great together, and I really enjoyed spending some time with them shooting their engagement photos, and will be honored to be photographing their wedding in October.

One Intense Kid

It doesn’t take much to see how committed some kids are to their activities.  Whether it’s sports, dance, school, or even karate, you can tell pretty quickly how deeply they love what they’re doing.  And one karate instructor seems to have some pretty great students, who adore him – Rick of Rick’s Karate.  This little lady, seven, came to us for something unique and which demonstrated some of her skills.

Thank you VERY much…!

So, mom brings in her kids for some much-needed portraits.  The kids were super cooperative, and we did some pictures in the studio and some out in our portrait park.  It was great fun.  We were done in short order because the kids were great!  But as they were leaving, the little boy (who is three years old) said “Thank you VERY much.”  It was so sweet… he had very good manners.  We quickly learned where he got it from, as his mother also thanked us very much.  Happy people rock! 🙂

Drum roll, please!

Remember this portrait?  Remember seeing how bad the condition was?  Yeah… pretty bad.

Well… it should be said that this is NOT easy stuff to do.  I don’t recommend it for anyone who likes sanity.

And the final result is…

Raise your hand if you think Diana (the restoration miracle worker) is a genius!
