An Italian Workshop

In this post, I told you about working with The Alpine Adventure Agency to come up with a photography workshop that combines an amazing vacation, an incredible package chock full of lots of adventure, and an educational workshop that could only take place in the Italian Alps.

Well, everything has been organized and laid out by Daniela Anderson, owner of The Alpine Adventure Agency, and we’re ready to reveal all the details.  But before that, let me tell you how I came up with our exclusive workshop program.

  • It was important for me to first educate you about determining composition and posing.  For many who attend this workshop, these segments will be very interactive.  I encourage ideas on posing from anyone and everyone, because having interaction means you are getting involved.
  • There is so much packed into the lighting element, that it will just spin by.  But I’m so excited about this part because there is so much to work with in this beautiful environment.
  • Finally, we’ll start to pull it all together by using new angles, exploring the camera settings and giving you a chance to apply everything you’ve learned in an unprecedented portrait session with a beautiful Italian model… who, by the way, will be accompanying us EVERY day of the workshop. 🙂

Now, on to the details.  Daniela Anderson is a wizard at planning exotic vacations, many of which have also included workshops in the arts and crafts arena.  And so rather than me duplicating all her efforts, I’m just going to refer you to the page she designed which outlines not only the workshop elements, but all the other details about this fabulous Italian vacation.

Here’s the link: Italian Vacation & Photography Workshop

It’s a great vacation, with plenty of value, fun, and food.  AND you get a great workshop, an awesome location, and did I mention the food? 🙂

Little Miss Savhana

Another repeat baby in the Most Beautiful Baby contest.  Lots and lots of energy, playfulness and zest for life.  Her parents are lots of fun, too. 🙂

Santanna and Little Mister Reth

We first met Santanna almost exactly three years ago, as an early entrant into our Most Beautiful Baby Contest in 2007.  She was cute then, too.  One thing about truly fun families who value photography is that they enjoy the experience each and every time.  Since Santanna knew me, after a little “I think I know you” time, we were clicking pretty quick, trading high fives and little jokes with each other.

As you can see, she’s grown up pretty well.  She’ll be four in May.

Now, this is her new little brother.  The name is Reth (pronounced like Reeth), and the personality is positive.  He is well-loved and quite the snappy dresser.

From day one, Santanna was a ham… she still is.  She insisted on bringing FIVE outfits (we only used four).  We loved the fashion show. 🙂

And the cute pair together.  Santanna’s mom is a Cowboys fan.  Her dad is a Giants fan (hence the Giants jersey (since you can’t see the logo).

Now if you can look at this next picture and honestly say that you didn’t smile, then you have some serious issues.  One day, he’ll hate that his mom had pictures of his naked butt.  However, until then, he was laughing up a storm about the whole thing.Santanna and Reth’s grandma & mom are VIP clients, and we enjoy seeing them every time they come to the studio.  I’m already anticipating the next visit. 🙂

Little Miss Calyssa

The first time we met Calyssa (and I hope I’m spelling her name right), was in a store where we ran across her mom, Niki.  We had previously taken pictures of Carmen, Calyssa’s older sister, and was pleasantly surprised to see the new addition to the family.  This is  yet another entry into the Most Beautiful Baby Contest.

Little Mister Grant

Grant’s mommy is also one of our wedding clients.  We look forward to seeing the whole family on a regular basis.  Of course, Grant is also one of our beautiful babies. 🙂

Little Mister Ethan

Another of our beautiful babies, Ethan decided he was very interested in a tiny football and a tennis ball… apparently throwing them and then retrieving them himself was his idea of playing catch. 🙂

Little Miss Morgan

We’ve photographed Morgan before, and so she was pretty quickly acclimated to the studio.  Her parents brought along the red balloons and flowers.  She provided the attitude. 🙂

Surprise!

Baby Contest Update

So, the contest started off with a bang… lots and lots of babies.

And then it snowed.  Something like three feet.

And people didn’t want to bring the babies out.  So we rescheduled a lot of people.

But we wanted to make sure you knew that if you call to enter your baby in the contest, you can still do so if you hold your sitting by March 6.  In fact, we have quite a few openings on that Saturday, March 6.

One other thing, and this is very important to us.  A portion of EVERY session fee goes to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  By participating in our contest, you are helping us help St. Jude’s children.

Call… it’s only $35 and for a great cause… plus the pictures are Awesome!

Senior: Megan

Before we get started, let me just remind you that I have a fairly good rapport with all the seniors who come to visit us.  I try to establish that rapport by striking up conversations on their school activities, work, and other interests.  The fun part of doing this is I get to learn more about people, maybe make a new friend, and relax my subject so that they look better in photos.  I wasn’t able to have quite the detailed conversation with Megan, because… well… Megan is just Megan.  She’s a senior, and that’s what’s important to her right now.

So, here she is…

Full speed ahead!

What Am I? An Expert!

Since I first started in photography, I had an unending thirst for more knowledge about photography, lighting, posing, and anything else having to do with my profession.  It was always my desire to just be better this month than I was last month.  While that didn’t always work out, it wasn’t from lack of trying.  In fact, I always worked my hardest to become the kind of photographer I envisioned being when I was a kid in high school.

One way that I have found to learn and do more on a higher level is to associate myself with other photographers.  Top photographers in the industry are not only inspiring, but educational and informative.  And most intend to be.  You might be surprised to learn that in one of the most competitive industries  for self-employed people, most photographers want to teach other photographers.

My favorite outlet for learning and educating other photographers has been the Digital Wedding Forum, an industry-leading online forum and educational tool that connects professionals all over the world.  It has changed the way I look at my own imagery, and given me insight into trends, equipment and processing methods that have made a huge difference in my daily workflow.

So, when the DWF (as it is affectionately referred to) asked me to become a Pro Portrait Expert, I couldn’t turn them down.  In fact, what it means is that I am a recognized authority on portrait photography, and serve to assist and educate other photographers, as well as provide answers to questions that plague us all as portrait artists.

I’ve never thought of myself as someone seeking accolades.  I don’t enter competitions or contests, and rarely do I even ask for feedback on my own images, except from the clients to whom those images are most important.

My role as an educator to photographers is well-established, with a stint at Shepherd University, several local organizations, and now my own workshop series for professionals and amateurs.  So, now as a Portrait Expert, I’m ready to do even more things to earn a place in everyone’s mind as someone who truly cares about my craft, my clients, and my fellow professionals.
